      Silas Adams Smith, b. 22-Sep-1843 in Hume, Allegany Co., New York,[1],[2] (son of Benjamin Franklin Smith and Weltha Ann Dana) d. 18-Aug-1921 in Grand Island, Hall Co., Nebraska,[3] buried 19-Aug-1921 in Nebraska Veterans Memorial Cemetery,[4] occupation Civil War Veteran, Farmer.[5],[6]  On Silas' Declaration For Pension, 29 September, 1913 he lists his places of residence since the War as Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and California. He married (1) ca 1868/9 in Iowa, Laura E Scutt, b. ca 16-Dec-1836 in New York,[7] d. 7-Jul-1886 in Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa,[8],[9],[10] buried 8-Jul-1886 in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, Iowa,[11],[12] cause of death Hemorrhage as a result of consumption.[13]  Laura: Date of birth 16 December, 1836 is calulated from the information on Laura's headstone that says she was 49 years, 6 months and 21 days at the time of her death, July 7, 1886.  Another source from Donald Kearns says that she was born 5 January, 1837 but I do not have a source for this so opted to go with the tombstone date. He married (2) 13-Jan-1876 in Avoca, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa,[14] Elisabeth or Lizzie Been, b. ca 1853 Iowa,[15] d. Unknown.  He married (3) 4-Mar-1884 in St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., Missouri,[16] Katie Ellen Larison, b. 25-Jul-1868 in Lincoln, Logan Co., Illinois,[17],[18] (daughter of Green Berry (G.B.) Larison and Nancy Jane Snook) d. 25-Jun-1918 in Newton Township, Jefferson Co., Nebraska,[19] buried 27-Jun-1918 in Powell, Jefferson Co., Nebraska,[20] resided in Logan Co, Illinois, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa & many others,[21],[22] occupation Homemaker.[23]  Katie: The EUB church records of Helvey, Nebraska show that Katie joined November 24, 1912 by confession of faith. He married (4) 25-Jan-1921 in Grand Island, Hall Co., Nebraska,[24] Minna Gamble, b. 0-___-1868 in Germany,[25] occupation Homemaker.  Minna: Minna is the 4th wife of Silas Smith-found info about her at the Nebraska Soldiers' & Sailor Home in Grand Island, Nebraska. Family story is she married Silas for his $50.00 pension.  She came to the home as wife of Harvey Gamble married Silas seven months before he died and was discharged from the home March 6, 1922 as she had married on February 23, 1922 to Carl Tmohn, Jansen, Nebraska.

                      ii     George Adams Smith, b. 6-Jan-1872 in prob. Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa,[26] d. Unknown.  George was in Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa with his mother, Laura Scutt Smith Viles in 1880 census, age 8 and 1885 census, age 13.

                             Children by Katie Ellen Larison:

                      iii     Katie Ellen (Eileen, Eilene) Smith, b. 4-Dec-1885 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa,[27] d. About 2 years in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa,[28] buried in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa.[29]  Have 3 possible birth dates - others are 1-April-1890 and 3-Sep-1887 - correct one is unknown.  In the summer 1992 Judy Knoblock searched Vinton, Council Bluffs, Crescent and Glenwood, Iowa to try to locate burial place - was unable too.  Other death date is suggested as abt 1892 or  April 19, 1887. Naomi Smith Woods owns the picture of Katie and Clara.

                      iv    Clara Mae Smith, b. 19-Apr-1887 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa,[30] d. About 4 years in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa,[31] buried in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa.[32]  Have 3 possible birth dates - Other possible ones are 3 -Sep-1885 and 10- April-1885.  In the summer of 1992 Judy Knoblock searched for the grave of Clara in Vinton, Council Bluffs, Crescent and Glenwood, Iowa.  Found nothing - Date of death is suggested as abt 1889 or April 26, 1891.  Naomi Smith Woods owns the picture of Katie and Clara. Gertrude Knobel Rolland says Clara was two years at death.

                      ix    Marietta Phoebia Smith, b. 18-Aug-1897 in Pacific Junction, Mills Co., Iowa,[33] d. 2-Sep-1911 in Daykin, Jefferson Co., Nebraska,[34] buried 4-Sep-1911 in Powell, Jefferson Co., Nebraska.[35]  The tombstone says date of death September 4, 1911 but her obituary and that of her mother's say September 2, 1911. She was taken suddenly ill while attending a ball game at Daykin. She was first seen by a passer-by & taken to Dr. Brown's office where she died in a few minutes, while her two brothers were playing ball.  Information from the Fairbury Journal 9/15/1911.  She was buried September 4, 1911.

                      xiv   Ernest Loren Smith, b. 14-Feb-1909 in Crescent, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa,[36] d. 13-Apr-1917 in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska,[37] buried 15-Apr-1917 in Powell, Jefferson Co., Nebraska.[38]  Ernest tombstone says he died April 11, 1917 but his obituary and his mother's say April 13, 1917. Ernest was badly burned & was taken to Lincoln or Omaha. He was returning from school & attempted to stomp out a fire which was burning a fence post when his overalls caught fire.  Reported in the Fairbury Journal April 12, 1917 and Obituary Fairbury Journal April 19, 1917, page 1.
