Benjamin Franklin Smith Obituary
from the Minco Minstrel, Feb. 11, 1910

B.F. Smith died at the home of his son, Silas A. Smith near Minco last Sunday age 88 years 10 mos, born at Gorham, New York on 15 April, 1821. He was the father of J.G., Silas A. and Lewas A. Smith of Minco, C.F. Smith of Dallas, Mrs. Florence Lee of Colorado Springs, and Mrs. Jason Lee of Grand Junction, Colo. He had been here for the past 3 years, coming from Colorado Springs, where a daughter now resides. His illness was only of a weeks duration. The remains were laid to rest in Minco Cem. Monday, funeral conducted by Rev. Avery H. Dickerson of Methodist Church. 88 years! What a long time that seems to us. And yet time is so fleeting. To Mr. Smith as he looked back over his long life it must have seemed like a dream. In 1821 there were no railroads, no telegraph or telephone lines. The vast domain west of the "Father of Waters" was just beginning to draw attention. What remarkable changes have taken place during the life time of this man. Will we of the younger generation live to recall as many improvements in methods of doing things? And yet this is the fastest era of development the world has ever know.
